We are proud to announce Drexel’s seven Gilman Scholarship recipients from the October 2023 application cycle. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, supports American undergraduate students pursuing study abroad and international internships.

Anna Hollander
business administration ’24
Gilman Scholar to Germany

Anna grew up in Southwest Oklahoma on her family’s 160-acre farm. This rural area is where she developed a strong curiosity for international travel and policy-making. Currently, she is working toward her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with minors in Communication and Politics. She has attended a study abroad program at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and will be traveling to Germany next! Anna hopes to broaden her perspective as a global citizen through studying abroad. Her hobbies include reading, baking, and singing.

Laiba Khan
biological sciences ’26
Gilman Scholar to Costa Rica

Laiba Khan is a third-year student at Drexel University pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences with a double minor in Medical Sociology and Food Science. She is on a pre-dental track and hopes to attend dental school after obtaining her bachelor's degree. Laiba hopes to expand her horizons regarding healthcare within various cultural contexts outside her own. With the generous help of the Gilman International Scholarship, Laiba will be taking part in the Healthcare in Latin America: Costa Rica Program for the Winter Term of 2023-2024. She hopes to learn about medicinal practices in areas outside the United States and strives to be a more inclusive and culturally sensitive healthcare worker.

Jay Kim
criminology & justice studies ’24
Gilman Scholar to South Korea

Jay is a fourth-year student pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Criminology and Justice Studies with a concentration in Crime Science and Analysis (formerly Justice Informatics). He chose to pursue a study within this field in hopes of becoming a federal criminal investigator or working with the intelligence community in the near future.

With the aid of the Gilman International Scholarship, Jay hopes to get a glimpse of the legal and social aspects of South Korea. Growing up in a Korean household, Jay was only exposed to the language of Korea. However, he now has the opportunity to not only improve his language proficiency, but also experience the culture of his heritage. Jay eagerly looks forward to the many opportunities that lie in wait halfway across the world.

Dune Nguyen
computer science ’25
Gilman Scholar to South Korea

Dune is an Honors student at Drexel University studying Computer Science. She has experience at Lockheed Martin as a Software Engineering Co-Op and at Berkley Technology Services as an IT Service Management Co-Op. This spring, she will be studying abroad in South Korea at Seoul National University. She is excited about the prospect of learning and growing in an international setting, further enriching her journey.

Jazminé Morrow
fashion design ’24
Gilman Scholar to the UK

Jazminé was born in Chicago, moved to Tennessee for a few years and moved to Evanston, Illinois after her parents got divorced. In Evanston, she attended Evanston Township Highschool and graduated with a 4.0 GPA in May of 2020. Throughout her four years of high school, she has been a scholar student maintaining a high honor roll which allotted her Latinx and Black Caucus Honors. She was also involved in extracurricular activities, and maintained a job at in retail during the school year while pursuing her dreams as a fashion designer. Jazminé is a leader and continues to exercise that trait through her involvement in Evanston Scholars, a college preparatory program and Westphal Bridge Scholars, a leadership and mentor program through her college Drexel University. She is on track to complete a Fashion Design degree in the Spring of 2024. With her degree in Fashion Design, she aspires to promote confidence through her clothing lines by inspiring people worldwide to express themselves through clothing. She also wants to be a Fashion Liaison who helps other aspiring designers build their teams, network, collaborate, and help them express their vision of social value within the fashion industry.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program supports a diverse range of students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000, or up to $8,000 if also a recipient of the Gilman Critical Need Language Award, to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs.

Since the program’s inception in 2001, more than 41,000 Gilman Scholars from all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories have studied or interned in more than 160 countries around the globe. The program has successfully broadened U.S. participation in study abroad, while emphasizing countries and regions where fewer Americans traditionally study.

The Gilman Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and is supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
